Introduction

The host relies on its immune system to maintain health, prevent illness and combatdisease. Innate and adaptive immunity together constitute the host immune system(Figure 1). The generic innate immunity responds very quickly to general invasion bymicrobial pathogens but does not confer long lasting memory to specific pathogens,whereas antigen-specific adaptive immune response reacts much more slowly, but develops specificity to particular pathogens with long-term immunity.

Currently, immune therapies are gaining more and more attention worldwide and represent important developments in treatment for certain cancers and diseases.Understanding the complex regulatory mechanisms underlying the interplay between innate and adaptive immune responses holds great significance and promise forimmunotherapy. In light of the current excitement and progress in this area, our lab will utilize a multidisciplinary approach to study the structures and functions of key molecules in innate and adaptive immunity, with a long-term goal to understand and modulate the functions of important immune receptors and effectors for the prevention and treatment of various immune disorders, microbial infection or cancer.


Recently, research in our lab focuses on combining structural, biochemical and cell biology tools to understand the functional mechanism of novel therapeutic antibodies, to reveal the crosstalk between gut microbiota and host, and to aid the design and improvement of small molecule or peptide-based drugs. In less than one year, we have already made substantial progress on some of these projects (Figure 2). Shown below is the crystal structure of an antigen-antibody protein complex recently solved by our lab at SIAIS.
